Understanding the Process: Can You Get Mounjaro on the NHS?

Mounjaro is a weekly injection that manages blood sugar and weight. It was first approved to treat type 2 diabetes, but now found that it also works well for patients who need obesity management.

Mounjaro targets the two natural hormones in your body, the GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones are responsible for helping you control your appetite and manage blood sugar.
Both hormones send signals to your brain to say you have eaten enough, slow down digestion, and help release insulin more effectively.

Mounjaro has been approved by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Right now, only a small group of patients qualify to get Mounjaro on the NHS. As part of the Phase 1 rollout that is designed to prioritise people who have the greatest medical need.
Since June 2025, NHS England has set clear rules for who can get Mounjaro.
For people who are wondering if they can get Mounjaro at the NHS, the answer is not yet, unless you meet all the criteria.
When you are prescribed with Mounjaro, you will be supported by dietitians, nurses, and doctors to guide you with food choices, exercise, and overall health.
This ongoing support lets you achieve the optimal results and help you prevent weight gain even after stopping the medication.

The NHS aims to offer Mounjaro to around 220,000 patients over the next three years. Each local Integrated Care Board (ICBs) will decide when and how to offer it in their areas.
In some places, patients will be contacted by their weight management team once the supplies are already available. This gradual rollout helps avoid shortages and delays that happened with previous weight loss injections like Wegovy.
Some regions are still dealing with staff shortages and system updates which may slow things down.
Because of this, many might not access Mounjaro on the NHS until late 2025 or even 2026, depending on when their local ICB is ready.
Access to Mounjaro varies by region. Each country has its own rollout plan and rules for who can get the treatment. In Scotland and Wales, the programme has not started yet because they are still reviewing results from England’s rollout before they start.
A few regions, like Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly already started small pilot rollouts. These early trials will guide how the rest of the UK expands its access to Mounjaro in 2026 and the following years.
Even if you do not qualify yet for Mounjaro on the NHS, there are still safe and medically approved ways to manage your weight.
Some people choose private clinics or online providers to have access to Mounjaro. While this can offer flexibility and convenience, it is only safe if you go through a registered clinic.
Avoid buying from unverified sellers and the social media because you could end up with fake or unsafe products.
Mounjaro is one of the newest weight loss injectables, but its NHS rollout is till in the early stages. For now, its availability is for adults with high medical risk and with several weight related health problems.
The rollout started in June 2025 and will slowly expand with Scotland and Wales expected to follow later.
If you do not qualify, safe alternatives include NHS Tier 3 programmes, dietitian referrals, or private treatment under medical supervision. Always check with your GP to find the safest option for your weight loss journey.
